Saalfeld town gates

In the 13th century, to protect the citizens and wealth of the city, a city wall was built, connecting the former 5 city gates. Of the original 5 medieval town gates of Saalfeld, 4 still exist today.

Oberes Tor:

The late medieval appearance of the Upper Gate has been preserved in the well-known town view by Matthäus Merian from 1650. According to it, the slender tower of the main gate consisted of four floors and had a hipped roof.

Darrtor:

The "Darrtor" occupies a special position within the town fortifications. The gate tower formed the passage to the former village community Alter Markt, which was located directly behind it, i.e. outside the town wall. With a few minutes' walk from Saalfeld's market square, the ascent to the fourth floor of the only accessible town gate is worthwhile.

From the platform, the visitor can discover something in all directions. The comprehensive panoramic view extends over the historic old town and its surroundings to the mountains of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the south, to the Orlasenke in the east and to the wooded heights of the Heide in the north.

After the extensive renovations of the 90s, the gate tower was opened to the public. Following the Darrtor visit, a gastronomic establishment in the former gatekeeper's cottage invites visitors to feast and linger.

Blankenburger Tor:

With its square gate tower with a narrow pointed arch passage and 3 floors with steep stone roof, the Blankenburg Gate resembles the Upper Gate.

Ocated directly at the Saale crossing, the Saale Gate marks the lowest point of the medieval town. The city gate on the banks of the Saale has been able to preserve its late medieval character to this day.
